Troubleshooting Open Directory Binding Issues: Where to Start E-mail
If you encounter problems binding to an Open Directory server, investigate the simplest possible reasons before moving to the more complex:

Use Network Utility or ping to confirm that a stable network connection exists to the Mac OS X server that is the Open Directory server.
Use Network Utility or host to ensure that DNS resolution is available.
More complex problems could involve SSL, access control lists, or missing or corrupted configuration files, to name a few.
